A Day in the Life of an EOC Intern: Celebrating National Intern Day

Every year on July 30, National Intern Day recognizes the dedication and growth of interns across the country. Internships provide valuable experiences that bridge the gap between the classroom and the professional world. Here at the EAA’s Education Outreach Center (EOC), no two days are the same, but every day is centered around helping visitors discover the importance of the Edwards Aquifer and the role they play in protecting it.

What Does an EOC Intern Do?

A typical day begins by preparing the interactive exhibits and activity stations to make sure everything is ready for our visitors. When groups arrive, they become our top priority. Interns split up to assist or even lead activities, explain how the amazing Edwards Aquifer functions, and ensure every guest has a memorable experience. Whether we are helping a class of elementary students learn about how their environment’s interconnected through groundwater or by having conversations with visitors on the benefits of having native plants in their yard, every interaction is an opportunity to inspire curiosity about water conservation.

Our interns bring different academic backgrounds to the EOC, allowing each person to contribute in unique ways. Students studying environmental science often enjoy diving into the science behind the Edwards Aquifer, while interns with interests in marketing and education help shape how we share that information with the public through graphic design or creating lessons. When the center is quieter, we work behind the scenes on a variety of projects, such as writing monthly newsletters and blog posts (like this one!), or editing photos and videos for social media. Interns can also help create educational materials and develop lesson plans for school programs. This comes in both analog and digital forms.

Much of the behind the scenes work comes in the form of prepping materials in slide shows, info graphics, exhibit maintenance, copy writing, prepping inventory for students to use; the list goes on and on! Interns, together with the STEAM Educators who manage the EOC, tackle the large amount of work these projects require to help us share the Edwards Aquifer’s story with people both inside and outside the EOC. It’s all hands-on deck when it comes to cleaning, prepping, and organizing for each visit.

Why Internships Matter

No matter what career you’re pursuing, internships are one of the best ways to gain experience. They offer opportunities to:

  • Apply what you’ve learned in the classroom
  • Build professional and technical skills
  • Develop confidence and communication abilities
  • Network with professionals and mentors
  • Explore different career paths and discover new interests
  • Learn to how to be part of a team working towards a common goal

One of the greatest benefits of an internship is that it doesn’t have to perfectly align with your long-term career goals to be valuable. As a Communications and Engagement Intern at the EOC, my role focuses on educating visitors and creating outreach materials that help people better understand the aquifer. While I hope to pursue a career conducting research, I’ve learned that communicating science is equally as important as conducting it. One of the most valuable skills I’ve developed here is public speaking, a fear shared by many people, including myself. However, starting small and gaining confidence has taught me that internships are less about having everything figured out and more about growing through hands-on learning, even in areas you least expect.

National Intern Day is a reminder that internships are more than just another part-time job, but rather a conduit for personal and professional growth. Every day at the EOC brings new opportunities to make a positive impact by helping others understand the importance of protecting our water resources.
